Trusted tree care across Nedlands

Drive down almost any Nedlands street and the canopy closes overhead: lemon-scented gums along the university approaches, tuarts and marris left standing on generous quarter-acre blocks, and jacarandas that turn Hampden Road purple every November. This is one of Perth's oldest and greenest western suburbs, and much of that shade sits on private land that a trained eye needs to look after.

Perth Arbor Services has cared for Nedlands' heritage gardens, riverside foreshore properties and institutional grounds since 2011, across the wider City of Nedlands. One clear written quote is agreed before any work begins.

What we do

Tree services we offer in Nedlands

One degree-qualified team for every job, from a single heritage-garden tree to a full development-site clearance.

Tree Lopping

People often ask for a tree to be "lopped", but heavy topping usually leaves a weaker, unrulier tree behind. We explain the difference plainly, and where real canopy reduction is needed for safety or clearance, carry it out in a way that respects the tree's health — if lopping is the wrong call, we'll say so first.

Learn more →

Tree Removal

Nedlands' large blocks and decades-old plantings mean big, well-established trees close to grand homes, boundary walls and mature paving. When removal is genuinely warranted, we take trees down section by section in tight garden settings, then clear the site completely. Larger canopy trees here may need City of Nedlands development approval first.

Learn more →

Tree Pruning

Thoughtful pruning keeps established trees healthy, opens up river and garden views, and lifts limbs clear of rooflines and powerlines. We prune to Australian Standard AS4373, so every cut serves the tree's long-term structure rather than just neatening its outline.

Learn more →

Tree Risk Assessment

The mature trees prized across Nedlands can hide structural defects, decay or storm damage that only show under inspection. Our written assessments give homeowners, strata managers and property teams near QEII and UWA a documented account of a tree's condition and any action it needs.

Learn more →

Land Clearance

For redevelopment, subdivision and new builds across the City of Nedlands, we provide efficient lot clearance that works within the council's tree-retention and planning requirements — so protected canopy trees are identified before anything comes down.

Learn more →

Stump Grinding

Once a tree is down, we grind the stump well below ground so it won't regrow or get in the way of paving, lawn or a new build on Nedlands' established blocks — grindings cleared away before we leave.

City of Nedlands tree regulations: what you need to know

Nedlands takes its tree cover seriously, and the rules here are stricter than in many Perth councils. Knowing what needs approval before you start saves both delays and the risk of an offence.

The City of Nedlands manages all street and verge trees, and residents can't prune, remove or interfere with them without the City's written authorisation. Doing so without approval is an offence, and penalties may apply under the City's local law. The City also keeps a Register of Significant Public Trees, protecting notable trees on land it owns or controls.

Private property is where Nedlands differs from most councils. Under Local Planning Policy 3.3 – Tree Retention (for lower-density land coded R20 and below), development approval is required before carrying out tree-damaging activity, including removal, to a large "regulated" canopy tree — broadly one around 8m or taller, with a canopy over about 6m across, or a trunk circumference over roughly 1.5m. A companion policy, LPP 3.4, extends similar retention rules to higher-density R25–R80 land. Routine, minor pruning is generally exempt.

Perth Arbor Services will tell you what requires council approval before we quote, not after. If an application is needed under the tree-retention policies, we can help you understand what's involved so it doesn't hold up your plans.

Not sure whether your tree is a regulated tree, or whether verge work needs City of Nedlands approval? Call us first on (08) 9227 0010 and we'll give you a straight answer before anything is touched.

A simple, no-surprises process from first call to a clean site.

Can highly recommend Perth Arbor Services. The guys were very friendly, professional and did a magnificent job on our very tall palm trees and the trimming of the other tree was 1st Class. A special shout out to Rowan who came out for an onsite quote. Highly experienced in his knowledge and we will definitely be calling upon Perth Arbor Services in the future! Well done ๐Ÿ‘

So pleased with the quality service we recieved from Rowan and his team. The council asked us for an arborist report for a Tree Growth Zone smaller than their mandated dimensions. Contacted Rowan and he helped us with the letter straight away. The fee was also very resoanable (fraction of the other quote I had). Highly recommended.

Saw one of your vehicles rego ending in 388 driving recklessly in traffic and driving in the emergency lane. Not great advertising when you have the company logo on the vehicle...

The guys (and gal) from Perth Arbor Services were excellent. Chris came to our property to view two large trees and provide a quote. I was immediately impressed at the knowledge and advice he provided. The team turned up on the agreed day and time and were thoroughly professional throughout the process. After, they did a great job of tidying up - very pleased and have no problem providing a five star rating for their service

Thank you so much to the team at Perth Arbor Services. What a fantastic job. Polite, efficient and concerned to get the right balance for me the client, when it came to the pruning of some of our existing trees. The result was exactly what I wanted and the clean up afterwards...perfect! I would highly recommend them.

I required quite a lot of work to be undertaken in my back garden, in order to correct a couple of small issues and to tidy it up, as I intend to sell soon. I was visited by Rowan who was very good in explaining how the garden had got to its current state and what was needed to get it to the state that I wanted. A date was agreed with Michael and Shamus and his group turned up exactly at the agreed time. They worked exceptionally hard and undertook the work that created the garden that I wanted. I was impressed that Rowan and Shamus had obviously discussed what was required and how to undertake it. I was soooo impressed that I wanted to give 10 stars, but the upper limit was only 5! If anyone that I know needs this sort of assistance then I will be passing Perth Arbor Services contact details to them.

Nedlands tree service questions, answered

Can I prune or remove a verge tree outside my Nedlands property?

No. The City of Nedlands manages all street and verge trees, and residents can't prune, remove or interfere with them without the City's written authorisation. Doing so without approval is an offence, with penalties under the City's local law. The City also protects notable public trees through its Register of Significant Public Trees. If a verge tree is a problem, contact the City or call us and we'll point you the right way.

Do I need council approval to remove a tree on my own property in Nedlands?

Often, yes — Nedlands is stricter than most councils. Under Local Planning Policy 3.3 (and LPP 3.4 for higher-density land), development approval is required before removing or damaging a large "regulated" canopy tree, broadly one around 8m tall, with a canopy over about 6m, or a trunk circumference over roughly 1.5m. Routine minor pruning is generally exempt. Perth Arbor Services checks and advises before we quote, not after.

What is the difference between tree lopping and tree pruning?

Heavy topping usually leaves a weaker, unrulier tree behind, while proper reduction pruning achieves the clearance you need while respecting the tree's health. Our arborists work to Australian Standard AS4373 and tell you honestly which approach your tree needs — and if lopping is the wrong call, we'll say so before we start.

Do you grind out the stump after removing a tree?

Yes. Stump grinding is part of what we do. Once a tree is removed we can grind the stump well below ground level so it won't throw up regrowth or get in the way of paving, lawn or a new build, and we clear away the grindings before we leave.

Is Nedlands affected by the polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB)?

Yes. Nedlands sits within Perth's metropolitan Quarantine Area for the polyphagous shot-hole borer, an invasive beetle that bores into a wide range of tree species. If you have susceptible trees on your property, early assessment is recommended, and our arborists can inspect and manage the risk accordingly.

How quickly can you attend a storm-damaged or dangerous tree?

We work seven days a week and offer emergency response for storm-damaged or failing trees that can't wait. Call us on (08) 9227 0010 and we'll get a qualified arborist out to you as quickly as possible.
